PBS PRESS RELEASE VILLAGE TO VILLAGE, WE ARE SURVIVORS

[MANGILAO, GUAM] – PBS Guam, KGTF, Channel 12, and the Office of the Governor of Guam are proud to announce a 3-part series to commemorate Guam’s 77th Liberation. Part one of the lineup is PBS Guam’s Commemoration of the 77th Liberation, followed by a 90-minute Virtual Parade entitled “Village to Village, We are Survivors.” The event closes with a 30-minute televised musical legacy concert.

The Liberation tribute will feature a tour of the island’s 19 villages, their mayors, treasured residents, day-to-day heroes, and Liberation and COVID-19 survivors and front liners. The virtual village tour will also feature many of the island’s World War II memorial sites.

The special series, “77th Guam Liberation: Village to Village We Are Survivors,” will air at 9 a.m., Wednesday, July 21, 2021, on KGTF Channel 12, on PBS Guam’s YouTube channel and PBS Guam’s Facebook page. Following the two and half hour special series, PBS Guam will rebroadcast the 75th Liberation Day Parade. This year’s “77th Guam Liberation: Village to Village We Are Survivors” program will rebroadcast on Sunday, July 25th at 4:30 p.m and stream live on the PBS Video App, PBS Guam’s YouTube Channel, and PBS Guam’s Facebook page.
“While the festivities have changed, the spirit of our Liberation celebrations remains the same. First and foremost, we pay tribute to our Greatest Generation, our World War II survivors. Their will to live is why we are all here today,” said Governor Lou Leon Guerrero. “As we push forward with our mission to achieve Operation Liberate Guam, our local initiative to achieve herd immunity, we also give thanks to our front liners who have kept our people safe during these unprecedented times.”

“At the heart of all Liberation Day festivities is our manåmko’. Because of their vulnerability to the COVID-19 virus, last year’s festivities were canceled,” said Lt. Governor Josh Tenorio. “This year, we resume celebrations and continue to pay homage to our Greatest Generation virtually, capturing their stories and retelling them for years to come.”
“I’d like to pay respect to our elders who made the sacrifices for us to be who we are today by providing an opportunity to experience the lifestyles and subcultures of the new generation. Like the passing along of traditions from old to young, the traditions may not look the same, but at the center of it all, we’re still very much the children of our elders,” said Don Muna, PBS Guam Executive Producer.

“We at PBS Guam are honored to bring this special Liberation series, including our virtual parade, to the people of Guam and around the world. Governor Leon Guerrero, Lt. Governor Tenorio, and I would like to ensure residents that the choice to host a virtual parade was made in the best interest of the people of Guam,” said Ina V. Carillo, General Manager, PBS Guam KGTF Channel 12. “The great thing about broadcasting and streaming this year’s Village to Village parade is that our fellow Guam residents throughout the CNMI and across the world will be able to watch live.”
Throughout the month of July, PBS Guam will also broadcast programming on the Japanese Occupation, the Liberation of Guam, and highlight memorable past parades.
